UN: Myanmar Army War Crimes Have Become

A team of United Nations investigators indicated in a report released today, Tuesday, that the war crimes committed by the Myanmar army, including bombings targeting civilians, have become "more frequent and brazen." The report from the "Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar," which covered the period from July 2022 to June 2023, stated that there is "strong evidence" that the Myanmar army and its affiliated militias have committed three types of war crimes, with an increasing frequency and boldness.

These crimes include indiscriminate or disproportionate targeting of civilians with bombs and the burning of homes and civilian buildings, sometimes resulting in the destruction of entire villages. The report also highlighted the "killing of civilians or fighters captured during operations."

After the military council seized power two years ago, Myanmar has plunged into chaos as a resistance movement fights against the army on multiple fronts following a violent crackdown on opponents, prompting Western countries to reimpose sanctions on the country. The military council has previously denied the occurrence of atrocities, stating that it is carrying out a legitimate campaign against terrorists.
