Morocco Joins International Coalition

Morocco joined an international coalition aimed at phasing out coal today, Friday, with the intention of securing more than half of its energy needs from renewable sources over the next seven years. The coalition supporting the phase-out of coal now includes 60 governments, all of which are eager to stop using coal for power generation. Earlier, the coalition announced in a statement the membership of the United States, the UAE, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, the Dominican Republic, Iceland, Kosovo, Malta, and Norway during the United Nations Climate Change Conference "COP28." The coalition stated that "Morocco will work with it to develop a plan for the gradual phase-out of coal without specifying deadlines." Morocco generates about 70% of its electricity supply from coal, while renewable energy accounts for 20% of electricity so far this year, according to official figures. Morocco aims to raise the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to over 52% by 2030.
