The Yemeni embassy in London has recovered four Yemeni antiquities that were seized by British police on Monday. It was agreed that they would be temporarily kept at the British Museum until the Yemeni government can take possession of them later. The embassy expressed its appreciation for the cooperation of the British Foreign Ministry in following up on the looted Yemeni artifacts since a formal file was submitted to the relevant authorities. The Yemeni government has been trying for years to recover hundreds of artifacts smuggled from the country, which has been in the throes of a devastating war for the ninth consecutive year, after some were spotted being offered for sale at auctions in Europe and America. International archaeology experts estimate that the number of Yemeni artifacts that have been looted and smuggled out of the country since the outbreak of war is in the thousands, spread across several countries around the world. Meanwhile, local authorities in the Taiz Governorate in central Yemen announced on Monday the discovery of ancient coins dating back more than 1,150 years in the Al-Shamayatain District in the southern part of the province.
