Local authorities in France reported today, Tuesday, that "a fire destroyed an area of five square kilometers, causing damage to a campsite in the south of the country, which led to the evacuation of two thousand people overnight." Authorities mentioned that there were no injuries among residents or tourists, adding that most of those evacuated were able to return to their accommodations. They continued, "The fire broke out in a tourist area in the Pyrénées-Orientales region near the border with Spain, which was threatened due to extreme heat, drought, and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 180 kilometers per hour." French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin wrote on his official X account, stating, "The fire is now under control." Darmanin added, "800 campers need to be rehoused."
