As every year, the Lebanese people eagerly await the holiday season, which provides a glimmer of hope amidst the crises they face. This year's Christmas coincides with the worst economic crisis the country has seen, along with high prices burning the citizens. However, despite this, some municipalities insist on bringing joy in a time when happiness has become forbidden for the Lebanese. In this context, the mayor of Byblos, Wissam Zaarour, confirms that "Christmas decorations will be put up as usual, but the Christmas decor used in previous years will be adopted due to the economic situation we are experiencing."
In a conversation with MTV, he adds, "In addition to the Christmas tree and nativity scene, there will be a Village De Noel, along with organizing a Wine Festival, similar to what happens in Strasbourg." He continues, "Caritas Lebanon will contribute to creating a festive Christmas atmosphere in the city for five days."
Zaarour points out that sponsors will cover all costs, from putting up the decorations to labor costs, as the municipality cannot afford it, stressing that they will not touch the municipal fund, adding, "We rely on donations and various parties have helped secure the necessary amount."
In Batroun, Mayor Marcelino El Hark confirms that despite the economic conditions, a committee involving associations, the festival committee, the traders' association, and council members is preparing projects for Christmas, including the Capitale De Noel, which distinguished the city last year and saw a large turnout. The city was then characterized by stunning Christmas decorations that impressed both Lebanese residents and tourists.
El Hark also mentions in a conversation with MTV that this year's decorations will also include last year's designs, with contributions from tourism and private sector institutions, as Batroun municipality, like all municipalities in Lebanon, faces unstable conditions. In conclusion, a promise from both Zaarour and El Hark to the Lebanese that this year's holiday season will be special and significant.
