Hawaii authorities reported that at least 36 people have died due to wildfires that swept through the resort of Lahaina on Maui Island, forcing thousands to flee. Video footage showed destroyed neighborhoods and businesses, as well as burned vehicles on the western side of the island, where wildfires have cut off most roads outside of Lahaina, the largest tourist destination in Maui with many large hotels. Officials late Wednesday stated that Maui firefighting teams are making strenuous efforts to extinguish three fires in different parts of the island, without providing further details.
