Guterres: Peace is Currently Difficult Between Russia and Ukraine

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that "it is currently impossible to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire in the Ukrainian war, as each country is convinced of its ability to prevail," according to an interview he conducted with a Spanish newspaper on Tuesday. He pointed out that "the United Nations is focusing on talks with both Russia and Ukraine to address tangible issues such as extending the Ukrainian grain export deal through the Black Sea, which is set to expire on May 18."

In response to a question about mediation efforts being made by China or Brazil, Guterres confirmed that "achieving peace in the conflict cannot happen at this time," but he hopes it will occur in the future. He also praised Beijing's position against nuclear escalation. This comes amid a new attack launched by Russian forces on Ukraine today, coinciding with Russia's celebration of "Victory Day."
