Prince Harry's lawyer has warned that "his life is in danger" due to changes to his personal security following his stepping down from royal duties. This comes as Prince Harry returned to London's Royal Courts on Wednesday to appeal against the changes to his security arrangements in the UK.
Harry, the youngest son of Britain's King Charles, is seeking to overturn a decision by the Home Office made in 2020 that denies him automatic police protection while in the UK.
His lawyer, Fatima Shahid, stated in court, with Harry present, "We must not forget the human aspect of this case: there is an individual sitting behind me whose safety and security—indeed his life—is at risk."
Court documents released Tuesday indicated that al-Qaeda had recently called for Harry's assassination, and that there was a dangerous car chase involving him and his wife Meghan by paparazzi in New York City in 2023.
Prince Harry stepped down from royal duties in 2020 and now resides in California with his American wife and their two children.
The High Court dismissed Harry's previous challenge last year, ruling the decision legal but granting him permission to appeal.
Harry, 40, was seen regularly consulting with his legal team during the second day of the two-day hearing, occasionally shaking his head as government lawyers argued that a "tailored" approach to his security was the right decision.
James Eadie, representing the Home Office, stated, "The basis for the decision and the adopted tailored approach is that it has positive merits from a security assessment perspective."
After a closed session reviewing specific security arrangements, Fatima Shahid stressed the importance of the case to Harry.
