UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that "the drums of nuclear war are beating again," pointing out that "the specter of nuclear war that loomed during the Cold War has re-emerged." Guterres, in a message on the 78th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, noted that "some countries are recklessly threatening to use these tools of annihilation again." He urged the international community to learn from the "nuclear disaster" that struck the Japanese city on August 6, 1945. Guterres emphasized that "nuclear-armed states must commit to never using these weapons," affirming the UN's commitment to "continue working to strengthen global norms on disarmament and non-proliferation, particularly the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons."
