Local officials announced on Saturday that at least 74 people were killed in Nigeria's Benue State in two separate attacks carried out by armed men last week, marking the latest clashes in an area characterized by violence between herders and farmers. Benue police spokesperson, Catherine Anin, reported that 28 bodies were found in a displaced persons camp in the Mgban area between Friday night and Saturday morning. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but witnesses stated that armed men arrived and opened fire, killing several people. This follows a separate attack in the same state on Wednesday in the remote village of Omugidi in the Otukpo area, where local chief Bako Igy told Reuters that suspected herders killed villagers during a funeral. Violence has escalated in recent years as population growth has expanded the agricultural zone, reducing the land available for grazing livestock.
