Dutch driver Max Verstappen won the Australian Grand Prix, which was restarted four times due to accidents, to maintain his lead in the Formula 1 World Championship on Sunday. British driver Lewis Hamilton finished second with Mercedes, ahead of Spanish driver Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin. Spanish driver Carlos Sainz of Ferrari was penalized five seconds for causing an incident with Alonso during the third restart of the race.
The race saw three stoppages: the first for an accident involving Alexander Albon of Williams, the second for Kevin Magnussen crashing into the wall, and the third after Alpine drivers collided just moments after the third restart. Race officials decided to finish the final lap behind the safety car, allowing Verstappen to claim victory.
