The Islamic Republic News Agency reported that guards extinguished a fire today, Saturday, set by inmates in a prison wing near the Iranian capital, Tehran. The agency added that death-row inmates ignited the fire in the women’s wing of Qarchak Prison by burning their clothing in protest against the prison administration. It remains unclear whether the incident is related to the protests marking the first anniversary of the death of young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini while in the custody of the morality police. The Kurdistan Human Rights Network had previously stated that female inmates organized protests today at Qarchak Prison in memory of Mahsa Amini. They reported that special forces entered the wing, beat the women, and fired shotgun rounds at some of the protesters.
