Who is George Soros?
George Soros is an American billionaire of Hungarian descent, investor, philanthropist, and a fellow of the British Academy. His net worth was $8.6 billion as of March 2021, after donating more than $32 billion to Open Society Foundations, of which $15 billion has already been distributed, representing 64% of his original wealth. Forbes magazine described him as "the most generous donor."
Soros has consistently supported liberal politics. In the first decade of the 21st century, he was a vocal opponent of President George W. Bush and donated millions to hinder his reelection, later contributing heavily to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaigns.
The billionaire is known in the UK as "the man who broke the Bank of England" on Black Wednesday in 1992, when he made billions by betting against the currency, which forced the UK to exit the exchange rate mechanism.
In the past three decades, Soros has donated over $7 billion to promote democracy, enhance free speech, improve education, and combat poverty worldwide.
