Doherty Returns to Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton Wanderers, competing in the English Premier League, announced on Thursday the return of Irish defender Matt Doherty to the team for three years, following the expiration of his contract with Spanish club Atletico Madrid. The 31-year-old player joined Atletico from Tottenham Hotspur in January but only made two appearances under coach Diego Simeone. Doherty left Wolverhampton in 2020 after spending ten years with the club, during which he played over 300 matches. Wolverhampton's sporting director, Matt Hobbs, stated in a statement, "We are truly thrilled about Matt's return, as he is one of the key players the coach wanted to sign. After Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, Doherty is eager to prove himself again and will strengthen the team in the full-back position." Wolverhampton finished in 13th place in the Premier League last season.
