U.S. Officials Announce New Aid for Ukraine

U.S. officials revealed that "the Biden administration will announce new weapons aid for Ukraine valued at $200 million as it begins distributing funds of $6.2 billion discovered after a computational error by the Department of Defense (Pentagon) that exaggerated Ukraine's aid by billions." They emphasized the need to "start utilizing these discovered funds because they represent the last portion of the $25.5 billion previously authorized by Congress under presidential withdrawal authority, which the administration can use to send weapons from U.S. stockpiles in emergencies."

The U.S. officials noted that "Washington is currently working on a supplemental budget request to continue aiding Kyiv," and stated, "the announcement expected on Tuesday will represent the first tranche of the unexpected $6.2 billion that was previously approved under presidential withdrawal authority." This package includes mine-clearing equipment, anti-tank weapons, rifles, ammunition, and air defense interceptors produced by Lockheed Martin for the Patriot system, as well as missiles and other equipment.

Furthermore, Ukraine needs weapons that can be sent from U.S. stockpiles within days or weeks to continue its fight against the Russian attack. The computational error has benefited Kyiv as it allows for the dispatch of more equipment.
