Biden Calls for Addressing the Risks of Artificial Intelligence

U.S. President Joe Biden called on Tuesday for the need to tackle the risks of artificial intelligence (AI) to national security and the economy, adding that he would seek expert consultations in this regard. Biden stated at an event in San Francisco, "My administration is committed to protecting the rights and safety of Americans while safeguarding privacy, addressing bias and misinformation, and ensuring that AI systems are safe before they are deployed."

During a meeting with a group of civil society leaders who have previously criticized the influence of major tech companies to discuss AI, he indicated that he wants to hear "directly from experts." The meeting included Tristan Harris, executive director of the Center for Humane Technology; Joy Buolamwini, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League; and Rob Reich, a professor at Stanford University.

Regulatory bodies worldwide are striving to establish rules governing the use of generative AI, which is capable of creating texts and images. Many governments are examining how to mitigate the risks of emerging technology, which has seen increased investment and popularity following the launch of the Microsoft-backed chatbot "ChatGPT" by OpenAI.

Biden recently discussed the issue of AI with other global leaders, including British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose government will hold the first global summit on the safety of this technology this year. Biden is expected to discuss the topic with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his current visit to the United States.

Last week, EU lawmakers approved changes to the draft AI regulations proposed by the European Commission in an attempt to set a global standard for technology used in everything from automated factories to self-driving cars and chatbots.
