Foreign Ministry Receives Report on Missing Persons in Syrian Prisons

Following the file of Lebanese missing persons in Syria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants received today a letter from the Ministry of Justice containing the report prepared by the "Committee for Addressing the Issue of Lebanese Missing Persons and Detainees in Syrian Prisons," which was directed in 2008 to the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, and the Chairman of the Human Rights Committee in the parliamentary council. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants announced, after consulting with Prime Minister Najib Mikati, that it will raise this issue with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to include it in the work of the "Independent Institution" established by a resolution of the UN General Assembly on June 23, 2023, which addresses missing and forcibly disappeared persons in Syria since 2012. The ministry emphasized its full cooperation with the United Nations to resolve the issue of missing Lebanese and those forcibly disappeared, as soon as a UN implementation mechanism to address this chronic issue is adopted.
