UEFA announced on Thursday evening the winner of the Best Player in Europe award for the previous football season (2022-2023). Norwegian star Erling Haaland, Manchester City striker, won the award, surpassing his teammate Belgian star Kevin De Bruyne and Argentine star Lionel Messi, who moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Inter Miami.
Haaland finished as the top scorer in the Premier League with 36 goals in his first season, breaking the record previously held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, who each scored 34 goals in the 1993-1994 and 1994-1995 seasons when there were 42 matches instead of 38. The Norwegian star scored 52 goals in all competitions and won the Premier League Player of the Year, Manchester City's Player of the Year, in addition to the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award, following his exceptional first season with Manchester City and the historic treble win.
