Families of Tunisian Opponents: EU Package Will Not Help Stop Irregular Migration

The families of detained political opponents in Tunisia rejected a package of assistance offered by the European Union to their country on Monday. They described this aid as shortsighted and ineffective, stating that the funds would not help Tunisia combat irregular migration. Yusra Ghannouchi, the daughter of imprisoned opposition leader Rached Ghannouchi, said at a press conference alongside children of other detained political figures, "The agreements made by the EU with President Kais Saied's government will only serve to support his regime," which she accused of committing human rights violations. She added, "Kais Saied is the one who caused these problems. The multiple crises and despair in Tunisia are what fuel the waves of migration." The families of the detained opponents called for appealing to the International Criminal Court to investigate alleged widespread human rights violations in Tunisia, a member of the court.
