Major Tennis Associations Aim to Combat Online Abuse of Players

The major associations overseeing the sport of tennis announced today that they will seek to protect athletes from any online abuse by monitoring, reporting, and helping identify those behind threats and other inappropriate communications. The International Tennis Federation, the Women's Tennis Association, the All England Club, and the United States Tennis Association will use the ThreatMatrix service to monitor social media platforms generally engaged with players for any abusive content and threats on X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok starting January 1st.

The associations stated in a joint announcement, "This development reflects the commitment of the relevant international tennis associations to protect and support athletes from mental trauma and potential real-world threats arising from harassment and online abuse." The ThreatMatrix service, which employs a combination of artificial intelligence and open-source data, will provide rapid assessments of threats related to personal safety, alert social platforms about instances of abuse, and support law enforcement agencies in investigating serious cases.
