The World Health Organization announced today, Tuesday, that no new cases of the deadly Nipah virus have been discovered since September 15 in Kerala, South India. In its sixth outbreak in the country since 2001 this year, the virus, known for a 70% fatality rate, resulted in the deaths of two individuals among six infected within a few days in September, prompting the state government to seek to contain the spread of the disease. The WHO cited the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stating that all cases involved males aged between nine and 45 years, identified in the Kozhikode region of Kerala. There is currently no vaccine for the Nipah virus, which spreads through contact with infected animals like bats and pigs.
