Russian media announced that environmental activists managed to save more than 150 seals from death on Sakhalin Island after freeing these animals from ropes and fishing lines entangled around their necks. A statement from the Russian "Boomerang" tourism club, which organized the campaign to rescue the animals, said: "The environmental activists in our recent campaign were able to save 151 seals from death on Sakhalin Island, after freeing them from plastic waste and fishing lines stuck around their necks."
The statement noted that young seals often get entangled in ropes, plastic rings, or fishing lines around their necks while playing, and as these animals grow, they may suffer from strangulation and slow, painful death due to the rope tightening around their necks. Therefore, the mission of the volunteers was to locate these animals and rescue them from this problem.
It is worth mentioning that the Russian "Boomerang" club had organized four volunteer trips to save seals on Sakhalin Island, and thanks to these missions, more than 350 seals have been rescued and freed from ropes and fishing lines.
