UEFA Punishes Barcelona for Violating Financial Regulations

UEFA (the Union of European Football Associations) imposed a fine of 500,000 euros on Spanish club Barcelona on Friday for violating financial oversight rules. The UEFA club financial control body stated that the Catalan club incorrectly reported its profits "from the sale of intangible assets (excluding player transfers)" during the 2022 financial year. The Spanish champion has recently started to overcome the serious economic issues it faced in recent years by selling a significant portion of its future income from broadcasting rights and other parts of the club (such as "Barça Studios," its media arm) in order to continue purchasing and registering players in the short term. It is worth mentioning that "Barça" currently holds the fourth position in the Spanish league table with 24 points, trailing by 4 points behind rivals Real Madrid, who are at the top, and Girona, who are in second place, while Atletico Madrid is in third place with 25 points and one game less.
