OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT chatbot, announced on Wednesday that it has entered into a partnership with Abu Dhabi-based tech giant G42 in an effort to enhance the use of artificial intelligence in the UAE and other Middle Eastern markets. G42, which was established by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, indicated it will utilize OpenAI's generative AI models in areas including finance, energy, healthcare, and public services. The deal, the financial terms of which have not been disclosed, is part of a series of measures aimed at developing the technology industry in the UAE. Neither company has yet responded to Reuters' requests for comments. G42, which is backed by Mubadala Investment Company, has been a pioneer in adopting AI in the UAE. In July, the company announced it had developed the world's largest supercomputer for AI training in collaboration with the U.S.-based AI company Cerebras Systems. Additionally, Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Research Council made its large language model, Valkom 40B, an open-source resource for research and commercial use in May. G42 stated it will use Microsoft’s Azure data centers as part of its AI infrastructure to boost the use of this technology in the region. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, visited Abu Dhabi in June as part of his "global tour" related to AI, where he urged international entities to regulate the rapid developments in this technology.
