In an initial report, Mexico's earthquake monitoring service stated that the earthquake measured 6.3 in magnitude, with its epicenter near the town of Matías Romero in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The U.S. Geological Survey indicated that the quake's magnitude was 5.9, with its epicenter located in roughly the same area. It added that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 108 kilometers.
