The head of the Constitution Party in Egypt, Gameela Ismail, has announced her readiness to run for the presidential elections in Egypt, stating that a final decision will be announced during a party meeting. She indicated that on September 20, the higher committee of the Constitution Party will hold a meeting "to announce the party leader's position on candidacy for the presidency and to issue a letter to the National Election Authority regarding guarantees for the integrity of the electoral process, election freedoms, and the safety of those conducting the candidates' campaigns during the elections and until the results are announced."
She confirmed that "we are still discussing the feasibility of the decision and its political necessity with various broad circles both within and outside the party, so that participation serves as a push to politicize society or be a boycott rejecting the transformation of democracy into a mere formal celebration." Ismail believes that "elections are an opportunity for change, not for extension. This requires the beginning of an atmosphere where devices or governments do not target candidates’ phones, invade their privacy, or arrest their campaign members."
She added: "Freedom of movement, safety, and security for the active circles surrounding the candidate during the elections and after the results are announced, as well as civil monitoring standards imposed by the constitution, are essential conditions for the decision." The list of candidates in Egypt has included Gameela Ismail, the heads of the "Wafd" Party and the "Conservatives," Abdel-Sand Yamama and Akmal Kartam, as well as former Member of Parliament Ahmed Tantawi.
