The consulate stated, "We strongly condemn the defacement of the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in California with anti-India writings; this incident has harmed the sentiments of the Indian community, and we insist on a swift investigation and urgent action against the vandals." The Newark police described the incident as a "deliberate act" and confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances has begun. The incident occurred against the backdrop of media reports indicating that U.S. authorities thwarted an assassination attempt on one of the leaders of the banned "Sikhs for Justice" organization in India, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
