Turkey's Presidential Election Moves to Second Round After Vote Counting

The head of Turkey's Supreme Electoral Council, Ahmed Yener, confirmed today, Monday, that a runoff for the presidential election will take place between President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his main rival Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on May 28, as neither candidate was able to achieve the necessary 50% required to win in the first round. Yener noted that with about 35,000 votes still uncounted, Erdoğan received 49.51% of the votes, while his opponent Kılıçdaroğlu secured 44.88%. Earlier today, Yener stated that the candidate from the "Ata" (Ancestors) alliance, Sinan Oğan, received 5.2%, while the withdrawn candidate Muharrem İnce obtained 0.44%.

He mentioned that 192,187 out of 192,214 ballot boxes within the country had been opened, amounting to 99%, with only 27 ballot boxes remaining from inside. Regarding the overseas ballots, Yener pointed out that 8,065 out of 9,594 voting boxes abroad had been opened, which is approximately 84% of those boxes. He indicated that counting of the remaining votes and inputting data into the results accounting system is still ongoing.

Turkey held presidential and parliamentary elections yesterday, Sunday, and the "People's Alliance," led by the Justice and Development Party, secured a majority in parliament, while the decision in the presidential election was postponed to a second round.
