The media office of former President Michel Aoun indicated that the EU's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, "does not want to normalize relations with the Syrian regime, which is his concern; however, his remarks about keeping refugees in host countries and linking their return to a political solution is our concern and the fate of our country, and we categorically reject it. We refuse to allow Lebanon to pay the price for the war waged on Syria."
The statement added, "The project to integrate refugees into Lebanese society is a systematic destruction of Lebanon, raising legitimate questions about the role of France and Germany in this matter: who granted them the right to manipulate the fate of Lebanon? For what reason? In whose interest? And what 'future' for Syria and Lebanon do you wish to 'support' while seeking to undermine the fabric of both countries and destroy the foundations of their existence?!"
He continued: "The integration project negates the return of Syrians to their homeland, which has various repercussions for Lebanon and Syria on multiple levels." He concluded: "This is a decision that undermines both the Lebanese and Syrian societies, and they must reject and resist it at all costs, with cooperation between the two countries being essential to achieve a dignified and safe return."
