The Chinese embassy in Washington stated that "China has decided to simplify visa application processes for tourists coming from the United States starting January 1." The embassy added, "Applicants for a tourist visa in the United States will no longer need to provide flight bookings, hotel reservations, or an invitation letter." This move is the latest by China to revive tourism and boost the world's second-largest economy following a slump during the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier, Beijing paved the way for passport holders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia to visit the country without a visa starting December 1.
