The Permanent Mission of Lebanon to the United Nations in New York clarified in a statement that Lebanon's borders are delineated and internationally recognized based on the 1923 Pulyekh-Newcomb Agreement, with the official maps deposited with the United Nations. This clarification follows the Mission's statement during the General Discussion of the Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, which took place on July 27, 2023.
The Mission noted that the use of the phrase "completion of the demarcation of the southern land borders," as stated in Lebanon's speech, is an unintended misrepresentation and not an official document filed with the United Nations records. To clarify, the intention was to show, demonstrate, and confirm Israel's withdrawal to the internationally drawn borders, the maps of which are deposited with the United Nations. In other words, it refers to Israel's immediate and unconditional withdrawal from several points and areas that remain occupied within internationally recognized Lebanese territory.
The statement added: "We wish to reiterate that the Mission, based on the directives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, is keen in all UN meetings to express the Lebanese consensus on commitment to international legitimacy and all its resolutions, particularly those aimed at ending occupation and Israeli violations."
