The "Security Belt" forces in southern Yemen confirmed that their leader in Abyan province, Abdul Latif al-Sayyid, along with several of his companions, were killed in eastern Abyan in an attack carried out by Al-Qaeda on Thursday. Media reports cited officials stating that Al-Sayyid and his colleagues died in an explosion while traveling in a convoy through Abyan province.
The media center of the Security Belt forces disclosed in a statement that Abdul Latif al-Sayyid and his companions, Captain Salah al-Yousifi, head of operations for the Security Belt in Abyan, tribal chief Mohammed Kraid al-Jadani, and their companions, were killed while "confronting the remnants of terrorism in the campaign (Swords of Hous), which was launched to enhance the Eastern Arrows Operation to defeat terrorist elements from the central regions of Abyan province." Al-Qaeda in Yemen claimed responsibility for Al-Sayyid's assassination by targeting him with an explosive device in Wadi al-Rafd.
