Imran Khan Accused of Contempt against the Election Commission

Lawyer for former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, Naeem Haider Pangoota, noted that "contempt charges have been filed against his client in a move related to allegations of making derogatory remarks about the Chief Election Commissioner." Pangoota wrote on the social media platform "X": "The Election Commission has issued a charge sheet against Imran Khan in the absence of lawyers." The Pakistani Election Commission has initiated procedures to charge Khan and other former leaders of his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, stating that "Khan and his colleagues made derogatory statements that show contempt for the Chief Election Commissioner and used offensive and abusive language." The former cricket star, who is 71 years old, has been facing political and legal battles since his ousting from the Prime Minister's office in April 2022. He has not appeared in any public event since his three-year prison sentence was handed down last August for illegally selling official gifts during his term from 2018 to 2022.
