The Pain of Sudan in a Letter from a Brother to His Siblings on the Frontlines

News of the humanitarian and military conflict in Sudan continues to dominate social media in many Arab and global countries. Recently, there has been widespread interaction with a poignant letter from a brother to his siblings who are fighting on different fronts in the brutal war engulfing the country.

Mohamed Jali, a young Sudanese man and the middle brother of Musab, the elder, and Yaqub, the younger, took to Facebook to share an emotional message directed at his brothers, who are on opposing sides of the conflict. The elder brother fights alongside the army against the younger brother, who belongs to the Rapid Support Forces.

In light of this reality, the middle brother felt compelled to intervene in his own way, emphasizing that he is the only true loser in this war. Mohamed wrote: “To my brother Musab Jali in the armed forces, last night our younger brother Yaqub Jali, who is with the Rapid Support Forces, was blessed with a son, and he still does not know about it. If you capture him or if he captures you, please inform him of this news. I ask God to protect you both in this battle, which I see I am the only loser in.”

Many described Mohamed's message as "painful" as it reflects the division and tearing apart that Sudan is experiencing, a division not just among citizens of one nation but among those of one family.

Many considered Mohamed's post troubling, fearing that "one might kill the other, leading to a major catastrophe." Commenters noted that "one of the tragedies of war in Sudan is that brothers fight each other, and the only losers in this war are the Sudanese people." Some expressed regret over clashes between brothers "for the sake of a person seeking leadership."
