Algeria: 259 International Judicial Requests to Recover Embezzled Funds

The newspaper "El Nahar Al-Jazairia" reported that the latest tally from the country's top authorities revealed that Algeria has directed more than two hundred international judicial requests to recover embezzled funds and requested assistance from 31 countries. The report stated: "The latest tally from the high authorities of the country indicates that Algeria has sent more than two hundred international judicial requests since last year, along with 7 requests for judicial assistance to thirty-one countries to identify the funds smuggled abroad for seizure and freezing before proceeding to confiscate them."

It also added that this effort falls within the framework of the desire to improve public life aimed at preventing and combating corruption and enhancing cooperation in the area of recovering embezzled funds. Final judicial decisions for the confiscation of embezzled funds have been implemented, as well as international agreements and judicial requests.

The report noted that "a total of 259 international judicial requests have been directed, 40 of which were in 2022, along with 7 requests for judicial assistance to 31 countries to identify the embezzled funds abroad and to seize and freeze them for the purpose of confiscation. It is worth noting that there has been partial execution of 62 international judicial requests for identifying and freezing embezzled funds."

Additionally, it mentioned that the government has been working on completing an executive decree that includes a code of ethics and conduct for public officials to institutionalize ethical values and define the legal framework applicable to public agents.
