A police official in India announced that at least five people, including two police officers, were killed in clashes between Hindus and Muslims in Haryana state, neighboring the capital New Delhi, on Monday. The violence erupted during a Hindu religious procession in the predominantly Muslim area of Nuh, about 50 kilometers from New Delhi. The official told Reuters, "The procession was supposed to move from one temple to another, but clashes broke out en route between the two sides, resulting in four deaths." He noted that "two of the deceased were members of a volunteer security force assisting the police in managing civil disturbances, and ten other police personnel were injured in the clashes."
By Monday evening, the violence spread to the neighboring city of Gurugram, where a mosque was set on fire around midnight, resulting in one death and another injury. Curfews were imposed in the area after several vehicles were set ablaze on Monday night, and schools and universities were instructed to close on Tuesday. The police stated in a morning report that "the attackers who set fire to the mosque have been identified, and several have been arrested, with security measures tightened around places of worship."
