Residents of Town in Southern Mexico Set Government Headquarters on Fire After Police Kill Young Man

Residents of a Mexican town set the municipal headquarters on fire on Friday evening in a violent protest following the local police shooting of a young man in the neck, according to his relatives. Local media reported that police fatally shot 27-year-old Brandon Ariano, the son of a local teacher, as he arrived outside his grandmother's house. Videos posted online show his father attempting to provide first aid at the scene. In a video, father Delfino Ariano said, "As soon as he stopped, they fired at the car and killed him instantly, shooting him in the neck. My son died right away." Authorities did not disclose the reason for stopping Ariano. Residents of Lierdo de Tichada in Veracruz, which overlooks the Gulf, overturned a police vehicle and set it on fire, clashing with security personnel at the scene. They also smashed windows of the local government palace and set it ablaze. A post on social media from the state public security department shortly after the young man's death indicated that four municipal security members were arrested on suspicion of murder and would provide statements to the state prosecutor's office.
