Everton's Points Deduction Reduced After Club's Appeal Accepted

Everton and the Premier League announced today, Monday, that the points deduction imposed on the club for violating Premier League rules has been reduced from ten to six points. However, the club may face additional penalties due to exceeding spending limits in a separate incident. Points were deducted from Everton's total immediately in November last year after it was found to have breached profitability and sustainability rules regarding losses. The Premier League stated in a statement: "An independent appeals board has decided that the penalty applied for Everton's breach of the profitability and sustainability rules for the period ending in the 2021-2022 season will be an immediate deduction of six points." The points deduction caused Everton to drop from 14th place in the standings to the relegation zone by four points. The club appealed against the initial deduction, describing it as "disproportionate and entirely unfair." The statement from the club confirmed: "Everton can confirm that the appeals board reduced the points deduction imposed by the independent Premier League panel in November from ten to six points, effective immediately." The appeals board concluded that the independent panel that imposed the ten-point penalty made legal errors concerning two items of the accusation. Everton admitted to breaching the profitability and sustainability rules for the period ending in the 2021-2022 season, with total losses of £124.5 million according to an independent committee.
