Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zaid, the official spokesperson and Director of Public Diplomacy at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received a phone call on Thursday from British Member of Parliament David Lammy, the Shadow Foreign Secretary of the Labour Party, discussing the situation in Gaza.
The spokesperson explained that the call is part of the Shadow Foreign Secretary's interest in understanding the Foreign Minister's assessment of the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza and Egypt's political and diplomatic efforts aimed at enforcing a ceasefire and achieving a sustained and adequate delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to the region.
Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zaid mentioned that "the Foreign Minister emphasized the necessity for international parties to ensure the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 2720, especially regarding the urgent activation of the UN mechanism to coordinate and expedite aid to Gaza."
In a related context, the conversation addressed the escalating tensions in the region due to the ongoing war in Gaza and its risks to future stability. Sameh Shoukry expressed Egypt's profound concern regarding military operations occurring at the southern entrance of the Red Sea and their impact on international shipping, warning "of the dire consequences resulting from the expansion of conflict in the region."
The official spokesperson concluded his remarks by noting that "both sides also affirmed the importance of finding a suitable political horizon to resolve the current crisis sustainably," where the Foreign Minister stressed the necessity of initiating a serious peace process within a specific timeframe aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state based on the two-state solution to achieve coexistence and stability in the region.
