Arab League Welcomes Start of Oil Tanker Siphoning Operations

The Arab League welcomed the successful commencement of siphoning the cargo from the abandoned oil tanker "Safer" off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea to a replacement vessel.

The Secretary-General of the League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, affirmed that this operation was essential to avoid an unprecedented marine environmental disaster in the Red Sea. He expressed hope for the successful completion of the siphoning operation, appreciating all Arab and international efforts that contributed to this important endeavor.

The spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Jamal Rushdi, conveyed a call to all relevant parties, including governmental and private entities and environmental protection organizations, to help complete the funding required to successfully carry out the mission of emptying the tank, cleaning it of residual oil, and dismantling it to completely avoid environmental risks.

Rushdi confirmed that several Arab countries have financially contributed to the siphoning operation, emphasizing that the preservation of the marine environment in this vital shipping route is a global responsibility that necessitates cooperation from all parties capable of contributing.
