The United Nations Development Programme, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and funded by the Global Environment Facility, launched Lebanon's Fourth National Climate Change Report, which provides a comprehensive analysis of the causes of climate change in Lebanon and climate forecasts. The report confirms that Lebanon's climate is constantly changing, with an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, a rise in temperatures by 4.9 degrees Celsius, and a decrease in rainfall by up to 22% by 2100.
The launch event was attended by officials, including His Excellency Minister of Environment Dr. Nasser Yassin and the UNDP Resident Representative in Lebanon, Ms. Melanie Haonstein, along with representatives from governmental institutions, civil society, academia, and the private sector. The Minister of Environment stated, "We are proud to present this report which demonstrates Lebanon's commitment to addressing the challenges of climate change. It serves as a roadmap for our country to continue working towards a sustainable future, and we thank the UNDP and all partners for their support."
Ms. Melanie Haonstein, the UNDP Resident Representative, added, "We know that climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. It is a matter of the survival of our planet, and thus it is at the core of development. For Lebanon, it is more than that; it is an opportunity to build, invest in green recovery, and create an economic model that is not only financially sustainable but also environmentally and socially sustainable. The UNDP remains committed to supporting Lebanon in this endeavor."
Since 1999, the UNDP has been working with the Ministry of Environment to mitigate the impacts of climate change on Lebanon; whether by providing technical assistance, playing a central role in coordinating national efforts to mainstream climate considerations into development plans and reforms, or working on initiatives and solutions for renewable energy and sustainable transport. The UNDP is also collaborating with the ministry to promote clean energy and solid waste management.
