Sevilla, currently struggling, announced the dismissal of their coach Jorge Sampaoli on Tuesday and appointed José Luis Mendilibar until the end of the season, as the club is only two points away from the relegation zone in La Liga. Sevilla has lost four times in their last seven league matches, including a defeat of 6-1 against Atlético Madrid.
Despite reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League, Sevilla sits in 14th place in the domestic league with 28 points after losing 2-0 to their hosts Getafe on Sunday, with 12 rounds left in the competition. The club indicated that "following the defeat against Getafe, which left the team close to the relegation zone, the club decided to part ways with the Argentine coach before the international break."
Sampaoli, 63, previously coached Sevilla in the 2016-2017 season and managed the Argentine national team in the 2018 World Cup. Mendilibar has been a coach for about 30 years, with his longest tenure being his second spell at Eibar from 2015 to 2021, where he kept Eibar in the top flight for six consecutive seasons before the team was relegated in 2021.
