The media outlet "La Tercera" in Chile reported that former President Sebastián Piñera has died in a helicopter crash earlier today, Tuesday. Interior Minister Carolina Tohá confirmed the death of Piñera (74 years old), who served two presidential terms from 2010 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2022. The minister stated that three passengers survived the incident, which occurred in the town of Lago Ranco, and added that the former president's body was recovered from the site. The businessman-turned-politician achieved rapid economic growth and a significant decline in unemployment during his first presidential term from 2010 to 2014, at a time when many of Chile's trade partners and neighbors faced sharp economic slowdowns. His second presidential term was marked by violent protests over inequality, leading to allegations of human rights violations, and concluded with a government pledge to draft a new constitution.
