Admiral Lisa Franchetti, commander of naval operations in the U.S. military, indicated on Friday that the Navy is "excited" about the prospects of improving operational communication with the Chinese military, amid ongoing regional tensions. However, she emphasized that more work is needed to establish the groundwork for the next steps. She stated, "It is essential to maintain open lines of communication between the two militaries to avoid misunderstandings and miscalculations that could lead to confrontation or conflict." Regarding China's agreement to continue phone communications between field commanders, something U.S. officials have been keen on, she said, "I am very excited and welcome this announcement." She added, "These agreements were reached recently, and we know we need to work with the People's Liberation Army to lay the groundwork for the next steps."
