On Tuesday, five prisoners accused of the assassination of two prominent secular politicians and the killing of police officers years ago escaped from the Mornaguia prison near the capital Tunis, in a rare incident in the country. The Tunisian Ministry of Interior, which published the names and photos of the escaped prisoners, urged citizens to contact the police upon spotting these "dangerous elements" to prevent "terrorist acts." Security sources told Reuters that these individuals are "extremely dangerous terrorists." Among the five escapees is Ahmed Maliki, who was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the assassinations of the prominent secular politicians Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi in 2013. Maliki, known as "the Somali," is classified by Tunisia as an "extremely dangerous terrorist." Another escapee, Raed Tawati, is accused of murdering a police officer in 2014 in the Chaambi Mountains near the Algerian border. A Tunisian court issued a death sentence against Tawati this year after his arrest in 2019. Security sources say he is also involved in "the most violent terrorist attacks" that have shaken the country in the past decade.
