Egyptian artist Mohamed Ramadan surrendered himself to security authorities in Cairo on Wednesday to face trial based on a one-year prison sentence for allegedly spreading false news against a bank. The artist, who will miss the upcoming Ramadan season, attended the South Giza Court in Cairo before attending the hearing concerning his appeal against the sentence.
The Sheikh Zayed Misdemeanor Court issued a ruling sentencing Mohamed Ramadan to one year in prison in a lawsuit filed by a lawyer against him, accusing him of promoting false information through his personal social media accounts.
In 2021, Ramadan posted a video on social media claiming that his funds had been seized by the state without any clarifications. In response, the bank issued a statement on its Facebook page stating, "The bank does not seize any client's account or prevent them from accessing it, except by a judicial order from a competent authority."
