Oman: Issuance of a Decree Regarding Marriage of Omanis to Foreigners

Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman has issued a decree allowing Omanis to marry foreigners without needing prior authorization. The Omani News Agency published the decree, which stated in its first article the cancellation of the Royal Decree No. 58/93 that authorized regulations on the marriage of Omanis to foreigners and amendments to the Oman nationality law.

The second article stipulated that the provisions of this decree should not conflict with Islamic Sharia, public order, or any regulation in existing laws and royal decrees that requires not marrying a foreigner as a condition for holding certain significant public positions.

The third article outlined that documents certifying the marriage of Omanis to foreigners taking place within the Sultanate of Oman should be officially documented according to relevant laws and royal decrees. Article four stated that documents proving the marriage of Omanis to foreigners issued by foreign official authorities before the enforcement of this decree, which were previously against the regulations regarding Omani marriages to foreigners, are now recognized, provided they are authenticated by the Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in accordance with the provisions of the second article of the decree.
