The Libyan Government of National Unity has launched an investigation following the emergence of mysterious ground cracks in the municipality of Al-Sabea, located south of the capital Tripoli. Residents have reported the phenomenon and are seeking to understand its causes. The Ministry of Environment stated in a Monday announcement that a team from the ministry visited the area to closely observe the ground crack phenomenon, adding that a report would be prepared and submitted to the relevant authorities within the ministry to ascertain the causes and potential dangers.
In addition, the Ministry of Local Governance announced that their team has moved directly to the affected area to explore and study the phenomenon, examining all locations where cracks or depressions have occurred, and collecting necessary information to understand the geological nature of the region. They are also investigating the history of the phenomenon with local residents.
Images and videos circulating on social media, taken from inside a farm in Al-Sabea, show deep, long fissures in the ground that have appeared suddenly, raising concerns and questions among the locals about the causes of these deep cracks. The Al-Sabea municipal council reported that these ground fissures have appeared in several locations, reaching depths of up to 4 meters and widths of 3 meters, with varying distances, noting that it has formed a team to investigate this phenomenon and determine its causes by studying the sites and taking samples.
