As the Threat of Famine Approaches in Sudan... UNICEF Warns

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned today, Friday, of potential catastrophic loss of life in Sudan as hunger worsens due to civil war, calling for widely mobilized resources. The Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group, are fighting the Sudanese army for control of the country in a war that has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions both within and outside the country, raising famine alarms.

During a UN press briefing in Geneva, UNICEF’s Director of Field Operations and Emergencies, Jill Lhopit, stated: "The brutal war in Sudan is driving the country toward famine, and unless there is sufficient political will, attention, and dedicated resources to respond now, we are heading toward potential catastrophic loss of life."

Lhopit mentioned that there was a three-month-old infant who was very ill because the mother, unable to buy infant formula, used goat's milk, which led to the child developing diarrhea. She added: "Hunger is rampant, and it is the primary concern expressed by the people."
