Two Palestinian institutions and a spokesperson for the Israeli prison service announced today, Thursday, that a young Palestinian who had been held under administrative detention for nearly two years died today in Ofer Israeli prison. The statement by the Palestinian Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Commission and the Palestinian Prisoners Club said, "Administrative detainee Mohammed Ahmad Rateb Al-Sabbar (21 years old) from the town of Al-Zahriya in Hebron has become a martyr." The statement added that the death occurred due to "systematic medical negligence... according to available data." It was clarified that Al-Sabbar had been in administrative detention since 2022, with the last administrative detention order issued against him in November 2023. Israel uses an old British law that allows for the detention of Palestinians without trial for periods ranging from three to six months, which can be renewed under the pretext of having a confidential security file on the detainee. The Israeli prison service spokesperson confirmed the detainee's death without providing further details. Regarding the cause of death, the commission and club stated, "Al-Sabbar had been suffering before his detention in 2022 from a congenital problem in his stomach and intestines... After his detention, the prison administration committed a medical crime by denying him treatment, and the crime escalated by depriving him of the minimum level of treatment." No response has yet been issued from the relevant Israeli authorities regarding the statement from the commission and club.
